More Strikes – by Labor’s own Benchmark, another FailureThe Australian Bureau of Statistics has today released the industrial disputation data for the last quarter that shows a considerable increase up to 10.1 working days lost per thousand employees. This is the highest level of industrial disputation in more than half a decade. Labor, in the Fair Work Act’s key performance indicators point to low levels of industrial disputation as a sign of the Act’s success – well today its clear there is a failure.

Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme Bill 2009 [No. 2] - Third ReadingOn this day, as Australians face yet another interest rate rise courtesy of Labor’s reckless spending, we as a coalition will oppose this reckless, complex and confusing package of 11 Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme bills, which impose nothing but a giant tax on everything. Make no mistake—these bills will cost Australian jobs, will cost Australian wealth and will make no difference to the world’s environment.
Review Details now OverdueIn the Senate’s October Estimates, Minister Chris Evans said the Government would release the details for the review of the Fair Work Act in November. Now that November has been and gone, the details must be released immediately according to Shadow Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations Senator Eric Abetz. “It doesn’t surprise me that the Minister who authorised the guillotining of 19 bills in the Senate without a word of debate would be lax on providing details of the Review into the operation of the Fair Work Act,” Senator Abetz said today.
Question Time Wed 3rd FebruaryWorkplace Relations Senator ABETZ (2.53 pm)Mr President, my question is to the Minister representing the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Senator Arbib. I refer the minister to the forced outcome between Total Marine Services and the MUA in relation to semiskilled workers in the offshore oil and gas sector. What, if any, productivity offsets have been achieved as part of that agreement?
Hull – Moody Finishes“The findings by Fair Work Australia confirming the Hull Moody Finishes agreement allowing workers a substantial pay increase in exchange for other entitlements is the type of innovation and flexibility we need in our workplaces,” Senator Eric Abetz said today. “There is no doubt the workers are better off. They want the deal.”

Speech - H.R. Nichols Society“FAIRNESS FOR ALL – THROUGH COMMONSENSE AND FLEXIBLLITY” It is a great honour to be invited to provide this year’s dinner address to the H.R. Nicholls Society. As a Tasmanian I am delighted to be able to make a small contribution to also honour the name of H.R. Nicholls a former editor of the “Hobart Mercury” - my local paper.
No Julia, you haven’t “got it done”In the 2010 Election, Julia Gillard declared that her proudest achievement was the harmonising of Australia's Occupational Health and Safety laws. Indeed she said "it wasn't easy but I got it done". Last night the South Australian Parliament has delayed further debate until February next year – well after the scheduled start date. Western Australia and Victoria have asked for a 1 year delay. NSW does not have harmonised legislation.
First SpeechIt is with a true sense of pride and honour that I rise this afternoon to deliver my first speech. I say pride and honour because to be chosen by one's state and party to serve in this chamber is truly an honour. It is especially so when one has been chosen to represent the best and most beautiful of the states by the most dynamic political party this country has produced in the most important house of this parliament. It is a bit like winning the trifecta.
Senator Evans’ Hypocrisy“A total of 17 Bills have now been rammed through the Parliament this week without a single minute of scrutiny - a single word of debate,” Senator Abetz said this evening. The Senate has both a right and a responsibility to debate and review legislation – this legislation and all other legislation that comes before the Parliament. That is what Australians expect from this chamber.
