Fair Work Review – Better Late than Never, Productivity and Flexibility Ignored

The Government’s belated announcement of the Fair Work Act review leaves out the vital ingredients of productivity and flexibility according to the Shadow Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations Senator Eric Abetz.

“The reviewing body appears to be skewed but at the end of the day the proof will be in their review,” Senator Abetz said today.

Launch Old Chapel Tea Rooms Book

Senator Abetz was delighted to be asked to officiate at the launch of the long awaited book chronicling the history of the Old Chapel Tea Rooms at Glenorchy at a special luncheon held today in the Tasmanian Royal Botanical Gardens.

“Home to the wonderful people from Aurora, the Old Chapel Tea Rooms operate in the original Chapel built way back in 1830. The Old Chapel is older than Port Arthur and older than the City of Melbourne,” Senator Abetz said today at the launch of the Old Chapel Tea Rooms book.

Common Sense Prevails on Qantas Dispute

Despite the Australian Licensed Engineers Association calling for a consumer boycott of Qantas and threatening to ‘slow-bake’ them, I am glad that commonsense has prevailed to see the Union bosses agree to a deal.

The Union has wisely dropped some demands including the building of a new hangar to be built in Australia.

Schweppes, POAG: Bittersweet

It is concerning that there has been an escalation of the Schweppes dispute following other union bosses forcing members out of work and into the picket line according to Shadow Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Senator Eric Abetz.

“This kind of blanket action by the union bosses is unhelpful and unnecessary and just escalates the matter,” Senator Abetz said today.

Another Day – Another Lock-out

“Today’s announcement that Schweppes in Australia will lock out 150 of its workers after rolling industrial action shows that there is a bigger problem with the Fair Work Act,” Opposition Workplace Relations spokesman Senator Eric Abetz said today.

“This is the latest following Qantas and POAGS lock-outs and it is now clear that there is a bigger problem,” Senator Abetz said today.

Some Christmas Reading from Labor - Just what everyone wanted under the tree!

Small and medium businesses have had a rude shock today to learn that the Federal Government has published 601 pages of regulation to go with the harmonised work health and safety laws.

The harmonised laws come into effect on 1 January 2012. Julia Gillard somehow expects workers and their bosses in States with the ‘harmonised’ laws to be fully compliant with all of the regulations, and they have just 16 days to do so.

Will Gillard stand by Rudd’s and Labor’s Federal Executive’s Decision to Block Militant Unionist Kevin Harkins from taking Sherry’s Senate Seat?

“Prime Minister Julia Gillard must rule out immediately any moves by militant unionist Kevin Harkins to be parachuted into the Senate seat made vacant by the retiring Tasmanian Labor Senator Nick Sherry,” Senator Abetz said today.

“If she doesn’t then Ms Gillard will be openly defying the express wishes of both the former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Labor’s own Federal Executive.”

Shorten a no-show on first Test

As incoming workplace relations Minister Bill Shorten is facing his first test in the new role he has passed the parcel onto his predecessor, despite doing back to back media interviews at the drop of a hat over recent days talking about workplace relations matters and all throughout the Qantas dispute.

POAGS a supplier of stevedoring logistics and port management services, has locked out 320 workers at Fremantle and Bunbury in Western Australia and Port Kembla in NSW after claiming bans imposed by the Maritime Union of Australia had rendered parts of its business unviable.

Rearranging the Deck Chairs Won’t Fix the Mess

“The axing of Senator Evans from the Industrial Relations portfolio today by Julia Gillard and the elevation of Bill Shorten to the position as a reward for his part in the ‘faceless men’ coup that knifed Kevin Rudd in the back is a stark reminder that this is the way Labor does business,” Senator Abetz said today.

“For months I have been calling on Labor to bring forward its review into the Fair Work Act and calling for the review to be conducted by the Productivity Commission, for months Senator Evans has just sat on his hands.”
