Asbestos Threat from Labor’s Rushed BER Program

“Labor’s rushed Building Education Reform policy has resulted in potential danger to staff students and parents from asbestos contamination at the Ouse School,” Senator Abetz said today.

“It’s been revealed that following the demolition of a school building as part of a $287 thousand taxpayer funded building program, asbestos contaminated material resurfaced a year after works were originally commenced.”

“Thankfully parents and students have now been assured the problem has been fixed and the contamination risk has now been contained,” Senator Abetz said.

“It’s clear however that this situation should not have occurred in the first place and wouldn’t have happened if not for the haste in rolling out Labor’s trouble plagued Building Education Revolution plan.”

“Labor needs to explain if a proper audit of the building that was to be demolished was carried out, which under normal circumstances one would have expected would have been done if the building works had not been rushed.”

“The fact that the situation at Ouse School has not been publicised shows how State Labor is trying to cover for Federal Labor,” said Senator Abetz.

“Labor needs to come clean and explain to the parents, students and teachers at Ouse School, why this potential health risk was allowed to occur in the first place.”
