Coalition Welcomes Win for Queensland Community Sector

The Coalition has today welcomed the Government's back down on the regulation that would place 316 community sector organisations in Queensland under extreme financial pressure

"This is a win for common sense that will ensure that 316 community sector organisations that do fantastic work in the Queensland community won't be shut down," Senator Eric Abetz, Shadow Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations said today.

"It was the Coalition championing the cause of the Community Sector workers and the employer organisations that has forced the Government to back down on this regulation in the interests of protecting these organisations."

"The Coalition supports workers being paid in line with the decision from the QIRC but it must be done in a commonsense way that will not result in organisations shutting down, services being cut or workers being sacked."

"We have offered to work with the Government in their consultations to ensure that the concerns are addressed," Senator Abetz concluded.

"Federal Labor now knows how many Queenslanders feel about the Bligh Labor Government," Queensland Senator Sue Boyce said today.

"Julia Gillard took Anna Bligh on her word and she was betrayed. To add insult to injury, Queensland community organisations were about to be slugged by a regulation that would devastate the sector courtesy of two levels of incompetent government."

"Many Queensland community sector organisations will be cheering today that common sense has prevailed," Senator Boyce concluded.

"This is a fantastic result for many organisations in my electorate that were facing financial turmoil as a result of the regulation," Member for Fairfax Alex Somlyay said today.

"I look forward to working with the Government in ensuring the redrafted regulation addresses the concerns of community sector organisations in Queensland," Mr Somlyay concluded.
