Engineers – Time to reflect on Strong Arm Tactics

"Extreme behaviour by union officials including a request for patrons to boycott QANTAS highlights how little the Union movement has learned from the collapse of Ansett on the 12th of September 2001," Senator Abetz said today.

"35,000 people are employed by QANTAS. A boycott of the airline (if heeded) until Christmas would see at least 35,000 Australians facing a very bleak Christmas, not to mention tourism employees and families who would have their holidays disrupted."

"Whilst one always hopes for a sensibly negotiated outcome to these matters, extreme demands only exacerbate the situation," Senator Abetz said.

"Just because someone says 'no you can't ride my bike', you don't go and let down the tires so no one else can either."

"The Government needs to intervene to ensure security in the lead up to the peak Christmas period."

"QANTAS needs to be fully protected from a similar fate as Ansett Airlines."

"When Paul Howes of the Australian Workers Union can bring himself to condemn a Union's behaviour, one wonders why is the Government being so limp." Senator Abetz said.
