Fair Work Australia’s Investigation into the Health Services Union

“Pointedly, Fair Work Australia’s statement today concerning the ongoing investigation into the Health Services Union and the Craig Thompson affair fails to explain why its investigation has taken over three years,” Senator Abetz said today.

“While I understand the need to wait for responses, this only explains the delay in recent months – not what has held up this investigation for the last 3 years.”

Given that the Cole Royal Commission and the Wood Royal Commission were able to conclude their investigations in far less time than Fair Work Australia has taken with this matter one wonders why this has taken so long,” Senator Abetz said.

“The report is now due in March – more than a month away – and may protract even longer.”

Significantly, it is only now – after Opposition pressure and public focus – that FWA has given some insight into what it’s actually doing.”

“For the last three years it has stone-walled and obfuscated.”

“Low-paid members of the Health Services Union deserve better and the Australian people expect better of agencies like Fair Work Australia.”

Senator Abetz said that despite the pushing back of the reporting date the Coalition would not be deterred from pursuing the issue at Senate Estimates.
