Minchin's Contribution Inspirational

Nick Minchin’s contribution to Australian public life, South Australia and the cause of Liberalism has been nothing short of inspirational.

He provided discipline, rigour and statesmanship to the issues of the day.

His first major role was to fix up Labor’s native title mess. He did this with sensitivity and determination. He cut through the impractical consequences of political correctness gone mad and delivered a workable compromise through the provision of Indigenous Land Use Agreements.

His professionalism was highlighted by his capacity to switch from Government Leader to Opposition Leader in the Senate so smoothly allowing us to move from defeated Government to a viable alternate Government.

His leadership and administrative abilities were there for all to see as he took on various difficult ministries including the Finance portfolio.

As Industry Minister his support for innovation and the car industry were well noted by political supporters and foes alike.

On a personal note – I see Nick as a philosophical soul mate but even more importantly as a friend.

As Nick’s Deputy for the past two years I witnessed first hand his capacity for hard work, a commitment to his beliefs, and his team spirit.

His leadership of the Senate Team after the election was always considered and professional.

I know Nick leaves of his own volition, to the great regret of all his colleagues but also with their very best wishes and admiration.

Nick’s wife Kerry has been a great support to Nick throughout his public life and I thank her for her commitment.
