Tasmanians Oppose Carbon Tax - EMRS Poll

An EMRS poll of Tasmanian voters released today shows strong opposition to the Green Labor Carbon Tax with the strongest opposition to the Tax reflected by Tasmanians in Labor held seats of Braddon, Bass and Lyons.

“The EMRS poll results should send a strong message to all Tasmanian Labor Members and Senators that the majority of Tasmanians oppose a Carbon Tax,” Senator Abetz said.

“More than half of all those polled across the State oppose the Carbon Tax.”

“This poll shows that the number of people who ‘strongly oppose’ the Tax are virtually double the number of people who strongly support it.”

“The vast majority of people living in the electorates of Braddon, Bass and Lyons oppose the introduction of this Tax,” Senator Abetz said.

“62% of all people polled are either opposed or unsure about the tax – 51% oppose –11% are unsure.”

“60% of respondents in the Braddon, Bass and Lyons electorates were more likely to strongly oppose or somewhat oppose the Carbon Tax compared to 44% of people polled in southern Tasmania.”

“53% of working Tasmanians, those in full time employment, were opposed to the Tax as were 63% of unemployed Tasmanians.”

“Significantly, only 17% of people strongly support Labor’s Carbon Tax, Senator Abetz said.”

“At the last election Labor’s Sid Sidebottom, Geoff Lyons and Dick Adams were all elected to the Parliament along with the promise that Labor would not introduce a Carbon Tax,” Senator Colbeck said.

“All six Labor Senators gave the same promise.”

“They all went to the polls with Julia Gillard promising the Tasmanian people There will be no Carbon Tax under a Government I lead.””

“Labor members cannot deny they are a part of this promise. Large images of Julia Gillard were more prominent at polling booths than the local members at the last election – they own the promise just as much as the Prime Minister.”

“What this poll result shows is that Tasmanians know that the Green Labor Carbon Tax will impact on their cost of living, destroy jobs and put a severe strain on the Tasmanian economy,” Senator Colbeck said.
