Double Standards

I am disappointed that over the last 48 hours, we have seen again the disappointing double standard in the marriage debate from the self-appointed media elite.

Example 1 – Benjamin Law

A left-wing comedian “jokes” about rape and having sex with right-wing Members of Parliament and there is relative silence and some MP’s even try to run a defence.

Imagine if the shoe was on the other foot.

Example 2 – Bill Shorten

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten over the weekend confirmed that he will legislate same sex marriage even if the people vote no.

Despite this, the same journalists and commentators who have demanded of me and others that we accept the will of the people have been silent.

Example 3 – ‘Same Sex Attracted’

Some may recall the confected outrage last year when I used the term “same sex attracted”.

It was disappointing that when Tanya Plibersek used the exact same term in a press conference that the same commentators and outrage merchants didn’t have a word to say about her use of the phrase.
