The Independent Review into the Future Security of the National Energy Market makes a number of recommendations which should be considered by the Government noting there is still an ongoing review of the Government’s Climate Change policies.
While I am pleased that the Review makes a number of positive recommendations in terms of energy security for Australia’s future, some aspects of the review are concerning including the brief dismissal of nuclear energy and the creative assumptions used for ‘business as usual’ modelling.
It is vital for all Australians that we have secure and reliable energy. It is also vital that policies do not cost jobs or increase household cost of living pressures.
The panel was torn between an Emissions Intensity Scheme and a Clean Energy Target and seemingly could not draw a conclusion on whether the Clean Energy Target should apply concurrently with the Renewable Energy Target or replace it. Clearly there is a lot for us to consider.
But my starting point will be in line with our commitment in 2013 to abolish the Carbon Tax and our 2016 commitment to reject Labor’s reckless Carbon Tax: The Liberal Party is for cheaper and reliable energy and more jobs combined with real environmental action.
