Tasmanian councils should follow mainland lead

The announcement by the Greens-controlled Byron Shire Council that it will continue to hold Australia Day celebrations on January 26 has been welcomed by Liberal Senator Eric Abetz who has called on Tasmanian councils to follow suit.

Senator Abetz has been a long-time advocate for Australia Day in the face of a political correctness crusade pushed by some that has seen a few councils in Tasmania try to abandon our national day.

“While it’s pleasing that this council has decided to pursue common sense, sadly too many councils around Australia – including in Tasmania – have been captured by this anti-Australia propaganda pushed by people who seek to divide us,” Senator Abetz said.

“I am hopeful that now that one of Australia’s most far-left councils have reembraced Australia Day, that Tasmanian councils will similarly embrace our national day.”

“Australia Day is an important opportunity for all Australians to come together and celebrate all that’s great about our country while recommitting to making our country even better.”

“I am hopeful that all Tasmanian councils will ensure that they celebrate this important day,” Senator Abetz concluded.
