ABC funding should be frozen if not reduced

Liberal Senator Eric Abetz has expressed concern about the year on year funding increases to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation over the forward estimates and called on the Government to impose a funding freeze.

Budget papers reveal that the ABC appears to be exempt from efficiency dividends applied to other taxpayer funded organisations:

“The Ultimo-centric ABC is a bloated organisation which, despite welcome job cuts and restructures instigated by Managing Director Michelle Guthrie, continues to be a bigger and bigger drag on the taxpayer,” Senator Abetz said.

“Clearly there is significant room for the ABC to reduce its annual billion dollar budget. A funding freeze and the implementation of an efficiency dividend would be a good way to ensure that the ABC, like all other recipients of taxpayer funding, are helping with the important task of budget repair.”

“It is simply unsustainable and unfair for future generations to pay back with interest these continued funding increases to the ABC,” Senator Abetz concluded.
