CFMEU/MUA Merger Appeal

Former Employment Minister Eric Abetz has congratulated the Master Builders and AMMA for launching an appeal against the Fair Work Commission’s decision to allow the merger of the CFMEU and the MUA.

“This unholy alliance of law-breaking union heavies is a real concern for the millions of Australians who support the rule of law,” Senator Abetz said.

“The CFMEU and the MUA in particular have racked up millions of dollars in fines and constantly break the law not to mention the links to the criminal underworld. Just as it would be against the public interest for Coles and Woolworths to merge, these superunions merging would be deeply regrettable.”

“The decision by the Master Builders and AMMA to appeal the decision is very welcome and I encourage the Government to intervene in the case on the side of common-sense and to urgently advance the consideration of the previously introduced legislation.”

“On the strength of the decision by DP Gostenick, it is clear that if the Commission were able to consider the public interest that this proposed unholy alliance would not be allowed to proceed,” Senator Abetz concluded.
