Comments on Marriage
Good on Israel Folau for having the courage to speak up on marriage – a very brave move in a time where some are quick to pounce against anyone who doesn’t share a particular world view. I am disappointed by some of the vile attacks being levelled in response to his calm and polite statement of personal belief, including from Dr Kerryn Phelps a leading voice of the ‘yes’ case.
Similarly, at the Press Club today we saw a measured articulation of the concerns that many Australians hold by Karina Okotel and Lyle Shelton which has been met by some in a highly inappropriate way.
I also condemn unequivocally the violent attack in Brisbane against someone seeking to stop the vandalisation of ‘yes’ flags and placards.
As Australians have their say on this important issue, it’s important that they be given the chance to hear all the facts in a calm and measured way without advocates needing to fear for their wellbeing.
While at every opportunity I have called out inappropriate conduct on all sides, it continues to disappoint me that prominent yes campaigners, including Bill Shorten and Tanya Plibersek refuse to do the same.
