Dame Enid Lyons’ legacy recognised in Canberra

Dame Enid Lyons’ enduring legacy and achievements have been recognised in Canberra today with the new Department of Social Services’ building named after her.

Dame Enid was a passionate advocate for reforms to the welfare scheme to, in particular, support women and children and achieved many significant reforms in this space during her time as a Member of the House of Representatives and as a Minister in the Menzies Government.

“Dame Enid Lyons is one of the greatest Tasmanians of the last century and I am delighted that the new Department of Social Services’ Building in Canberra has been named in her honour,” Senator Abetz said.

“Dame Enid wasn’t just a trailblazer for women, she is someone who achieved great things in her time in Parliament including by championing a social security safety net for, in particular, women and children and widows.”

“I am pleased that the Federal Liberal Government has recognised Dame Enid in this special way,” Senator Abetz concluded.
