Election as Chair of Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee

Liberal Senator Eric Abetz said he was honoured to have been elected as the Chair of the Senate’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee earlier today.

Senator Abetz has long had a keen interest in the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade portfolios and has spoken at length about their strategic importance for the future of Australia.

“I appreciate the confidence that my colleagues have placed in me to Chair this important committee that oversees the important Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade portfolios,” Senator Abetz concluded.

“In my former role as the Employment Minister, I worked closely with the then Trade Minister to ensure the Trade agreements with China, Japan and Korea maximised job creation in Australia and am looking forward to similarly advocating for more agreements in order to promote economic growth.”

“One of the key achievements of the Federal Coalition Government since 2013 has been to significantly raise the profile of Australia on the world stage and it is important that we use that role responsibly to advance Australia’s interests.”

“In the defence space, the Government is undertaking the largest build-up of military capability in peacetime history which both will allow Australia more defence capability to defend and protect our interests while creating jobs and investment in Australia.”

“From a Tasmanian perspective, I understand the key importance of tourism to Tasmania and will continue to be a robust advocate for growing the tourism industry in my home state.”

“With so many dynamic challenges across these portfolios, I am looking forward to bringing a new vim and vigour to the role to advocate the Government’s portfolio achievements and to bring new policy options to the table for consideration.”

“I am looking forward to working with all members of the Committee and the relevant Ministers in this new role,” Senator Abetz concluded.
