GetUp claims trashed by Senate motion
Following repeated claims from GetUp that the Australian Electoral Commission has launched a “twisted investigation” to attack GetUp at the behest of the Government, the Senate has today unanimously affirmed the independence of the AEC.
The Senate has today unanimously supported the following motion:
That the Senate –
- Affirms the independence of the Australian Electoral Commission;
- Rejects allegations that the Australian Electoral Commission is partisan or unprofessional; and
- Expresses full confidence in the Australian Electoral Commissioner.
“GetUp’s outrageous attacks on the independence and integrity of the Australian Electoral Commission has been completely trashed with the Senate’s unequivocal support of the Commission,” Senator Abetz said.
“The fact that all Senators – from the left of the Greens to the right of One Nation voted emphatically in support of the AEC’s independence and to reject allegations from the likes of GetUp shows the nasty and partisan nature of GetUp’s attacks.”
“GetUp needs to apologise to the AEC in circumstances where not even the Greens will defend GetUp’s slurs. More importantly, Labor and the Greens know they can’t defend the slurs and should therefore publicly condemn GetUp’s extreme and hysterical reaction to being asked by the AEC to engage in appropriate disclosures,” Senator Abetz concluded.
