Gillard must stand by her word on Joe McDonald

Reports today that militant union boss Joe McDonald has been allowed to re-join the Labor Party six years after he was expelled by then Labor Leader Kevin Rudd is to be condemned and Ms Gillard must intervene.

In 2007, Ms Gillard made the iron clad commitment that: “We’ve got zero tolerance for this kind of conduct. We’ve demonstrated that with Joe McDonald and in Government we’ll make sure that there is zero tolerance for unlawful conduct or thuggery.” (Julia Gillard, Channel Nine – Today Show, 22/06/2007)

And directly in relation to Mr McDonald: “Kevin Rudd and I have made it clear that under our leadership of the Labor Party there will be zero tolerance for unlawful behaviour or thuggish behaviour in Australian workplaces.” (Julia Gillard, Doorstop – Canberra, 21/06/2007)

“Ms Gillard must stand by her word and maintain the tough stance taken by Mr Rudd,” Senator Abetz said today.

“This decision is a clear breach of trust with the Australian people and the members of the Australian Labor Party.”

“Mr McDonald as recently as a few months ago was continuing his thuggish behaviour by sneaking onto worksites in clear violation of Ms Gillard’s own Fair Work Act.”

“One trusts that this isn’t a reward for becoming National President of the CFMEU in recent months.”

“Ms Gillard must pick up the phone this morning otherwise she will be sending a clear signal that the worst kinds of thuggery and intimidation have a place in the Australian Labor Party and in the Australian community,” Senator Abetz said.
