Government’s suspension of aid to Union Aid Abroad welcome
The decision of Foreign Minister to suspend foreign aid provided to Union Aid Abroad (APHEDA) following revelations that funding had made its way to a Palestinian terrorist group in the Gaza Strip has been welcomed by Liberal Senator Eric Abetz.
Senator Abetz called on the Government to suspend funding to Union Aid Abroad in June.
“Australia’s foreign aid must not, under any circumstances, be used to fund or support terrorism and the fact that taxpayers’ money seems to have made its way to a Palestinian terror group is deeply troubling,” Senator Abetz said.
“While the full investigation is continuing, I am very pleased that the Government has adopted my suggestion that all foreign aid that’s provided to Union Aid Abroad be suspended until the conclusion of the investigation.”
“I am hopeful that Union Aid Abroad and the now Member for Batman, Ged Kearney, will fully cooperate with the investigation that is being undertaken by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.”
“I congratulate the former Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, on this strong decision,” Senator Abetz concluded.
