Jeff Lawrence gets soft landing in Fair Work Commission

“Bill Shorten’s announcement today that Jeff Lawrence will be appointed a Deputy President of the Fair Work Commission confirms that Labor’s “Jobs for Labor’s mates” network is alive and well,” Senator Abetz said today.

“It was always very curious that Mr Lawrence silently stepped away from his plumb job at the ACTU but now we know why.”

“The role of Deputy President at the FWC is supposed to be one which commands a ‘balanced’ interpretation of industrial relations law.”

Concerningly this is the same Jeff Lawrence who said recently “All I’ve ever wanted to do, or intend to do, is work for unions.”

“The question is, does Mr Lawrence in his new role as a Deputy President at the FWC still hold the same view?”

“The appointment of Mr Lawrence to the FWC also highlights the fact that Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten sees himself as a trade union boss first and a Government Minister second.”

“It’s also noted that as well as Mr Lawrence, Mr Hartcher, Commissioner Gooley and Mr Gostencnik all come with the pedigree of being ex-trade union bosses.”

“Labor promised they would not appoint an endless tribe of trade union bosses to the Commission but it seems that’s exactly what we’ve got,” Senator Abetz said.
