The Government’s new Multicultural Statement is a welcome departure from identity politics back to our core values as a nation according to Liberal Senator Eric Abetz.
A migrant to Australia himself, Senator Abetz has long been an advocate of a more values based immigration system with integration being at the core of our multicultural settlement services.
“Labor’s experiment of shifting the multicultural system to that of identity politics and placing an emphasis on welfare has been an abject failure and undermined our society’s cohesion,” Senator Abetz said today.
“The new Multicultural Statement’s welcome emphasis on the freedoms we hold dear and on reward for effort are welcome additions which will better support new Australians to integrate into the community.”
“For my family when we came to Australia, the strong community support and emphasis on reward for effort inspired my family, and many other migrant families, to contribute to our nation to make Australia an even better place.”
“Those principles were at the cornerstone of multicultural policy in Australia from the Menzies Government right through to the Howard Government until they were undermined by the Rudd/Gillard/Rudd Government.”
“I congratulate my colleague, Senator Zed Seselja, on this outstanding initiative,” Senator Abetz concluded.
