Liberal Senator for Tasmania

‘Safe Schools’ should be made public

Reports that the NSW Government is continuing to shamefully block requests on which NSW taxpayer-funded public schools are using the radical ‘Safe Schools’ programme are deeply concerning.

The creator of the misnamed programme, Roz Ward, belled the cat when she said the programme was set up to:

“… Safe Schools Coalition is about supporting gender and sexual diversity. Not about celebrating diversity. Not about stopping bullying. About gender and sexual diversity. About same-sex attractive. About being transgender. About being lesbian, gay, bisexual – say the words – transgender, intersex. Not just 'Be nice to everyone. Everyone’s great'.”

(Safe Schools Coalition National Symposium in Melbourne, on 13 June, 2014)

“Parents have an absolute right to know what their children are being taught in schools. It is deeply troubling to see a State Government, especially a Liberal Government, going to such extremes to hide this basic information,” Senator Abetz said.

“Understandably, parents are concerned about this programme potentially operating in their schools and taxpayers are concerned about their taxes being spent to push this self-described radical Marxist ideological programme in public schools.”

“Instead of suppressing this information, the information should be released both to parents but also to the community as a whole.”

“I congratulate the NSW Member for Epping, Damien Tudehope, who has been a standout advocate for the rights of parents across NSW on this important issue,” Senator Abetz concluded.
