Soutphommasane’s disappointing last stand

Tasmanian Liberal Senator Eric Abetz has labelled outgoing Race Discrimination Commissioner Tim Soutphommasane’s leaked address to the Whitlam Institute as highly disappointing and lacking in self-awareness.

After Dr Soutphommasane spent his five-year term playing identity politics, he now claims that ‘’race politics” is back.

“The speech that the outgoing Commissioner is due to deliver is just the latest example of him pushing his ideology at the expense of good public policy,” Senator Abetz said.

“Sadly, throughout his term we have seen Dr Soutphommasane aid and abet racial division, a prime example being his hounding of Bill Leak by purposefully and deliberately seeking to drum up complaints that were later found to be lacking.”

“Dr Soutphommasane’s unfortunate and unsustainable assertions including by seeking to compare current policy settings to the White Australia policy is just another example of his often counterproductive interventions in the public discourse.”

“His far-left victimhood narrative was never going to bring Australians together – instead he has used this $330,000 a year role to push a mantra of division and ideology that is out of step with good public policy.”

“I am hopeful that his replacement will have some capability for judgement and discernment,” Senator Abetz concluded.
