The Hon. Dr John Herron AO
I am saddened by the passing of former Senator, The Hon. Dr John Herron AO, who served in the Senate from 1990 to 2002 and who was a Minister in the Howard Government.
I worked particularly closely with Senator Herron as the then Chair of the Native Title Committee when he was the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs.
A well respected surgeon, he brought both a deep understanding of health policy but also a wonderful bed-side manner to all his interactions with colleagues and stakeholders.
I particularly recall his affable personality and his great enthusiasm for not only our Liberal values but also for, in particular, health policy.
An energetic person, he is someone who was always on the move and had many things on the go – be it in his Ministerial portfolio, in health policy or in establishing the Lyons Forum. Following his retirement from the Parliament, he served Australia with great distinction abroad and was highly regarded in having been awarded numerous international honours.
His continuing contribution to his nation and to his beloved profession in continuing to serve in a number of roles well into his eighties is highly admirable and simply underscores his drive and passion for service.
My thoughts are with the extended family of Dr Herron at this time.
