Yarra City & Darebin Councils should get back to business: Senators
Liberal Senator Eric Abetz, Chair of the Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee, has hit out at the Darebin and Yarra City Councils for continuing to waste their rate-payers’ money on seeking to influence national and international policy.
As a part of the Coalition Senators’ Report tabled in the Senate today following a review of the Trans Pacific Partnership, the Darebin and Yarra City Councils have been criticised over their submission to the inquiry. Their report has recommended:
The City of Darebin and the Yarra City Councils refocus their use of ratepayer resources to their core business of roads, rates and rubbish instead of dabbling in areas where they have neither expertise nor mandate.
“Coalition Senators are concerned that the rate-payers of Darebin and Yarra are unwittingly funding local councils which instead of focusing on their business of roads, rates and rubbish are spending their time and money on trying to change national and international policy, matters well beyond their expertise,” Senator Abetz said.
“These two councils are repeat offenders in constantly obsessing on matters that are far outside of their remit instead of focusing on the important local issues in their local area.”
“Instead of seeking to be Tin Pot Prime Ministers, it’s time for these councils to get back to their day jobs,” Senator Abetz concluded.
